BOINC is the way by which to participate in the work being done by the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence "SETI" group centred at Berkeley University in California in the United States of America. using the Aracibo Dish Antenna in Pueto Rico signals from space are collected. These signals are then analysised using the BOINC software on your home or office computer. This analysis work does not interfere with the normal running of you computer. BOINC collects fresh projects automatedly from the main computer at Berkeley. I am using BOINC to participate in the world famous SETI projects. However there are several other type of science project that BOINC is able to connect to.
